Why gross, net and employer cost are three different numbers
In Turkey candidates negotiate in net — the amount that lands in their bank account. Employers budget in gross, and what the company actually pays is higher still, because employer social security and unemployment insurance sit on top of the gross.
Those three figures are not related by a fixed percentage. The gap depends on the salary level, the statutory minimum wage exemption and where the employee sits in the income tax scale.
Income tax is cumulative, so the net changes through the year
Turkish income tax is calculated on a cumulative base across the tax year. As the employee's cumulative earnings cross each bracket, the rate applied to the rest of the year rises.
The practical consequence: on a fixed gross contract the employee's take-home falls month by month. The table on this page shows exactly when and by how much.
Frequently asked questions
- Does this calculator use current Turkish parameters?
- Yes. It uses the statutory minimum wage, the social security earnings ceiling and the income tax scale in force for the current year, together with the minimum-wage income tax and stamp duty exemptions.
- What is included in 'total employer cost'?
- Gross salary plus the employer's social security contribution and the employer's unemployment insurance contribution. The default uses the undiscounted rate; if your workplace qualifies for a statutory incentive you can select it, but leaving it undiscounted will never understate your cost.
- Is the data I type sent anywhere?
- No. The calculation runs entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted to a server, stored or logged.
